For decades, Zoe Lucas, naturalist and environmentalist, has been cataloging the flora and fauna on Sable Island, a small island close to Canada that’s only 34 square kilometers big. Geographies of Solitude is a beautiful portrait of both Zoe and the island, filled with impressive images of a dreamscape with dunes populated by wild horses, but also by increasing amounts of washed up plastic from all over the world.
TALK In Geographies of Solitude, filmmaker Jacquelyn Mills experiments with ways to integrate the surrounding of Sable Island in the development process of her analogue film. She exposes film to moonlight by laying it in the grass, and develops it in seaweed. She buries it in horse dung, or among juniper roots. After the screening, we learn more about such alternative ways of film development from self-taught expert Karel Doing, who uses plant material in his film development. He will give a demonstration using plants from Nijmegen soil and together we explore ways to use the world around us to represent the world around us.
This programme is a collaboration with POST, platform for contemporary art. The event takes place in their Nijmegen location in the Paraplufabrieken.
