During this artist talk, which takes place in collaboration with ArtEZ, Puck Verkade will elaborate on the creation of Plague, her fascination with the absurd and the characters she previously developed. Moving images, installations and drawings are central to Verkade’s artistic practice. With humor and a pronounced penchant for the absurd, she tells stories through her videos and drawings from uncanny perspectives in which archetypal characters are used to candidly expose the contradictions in human behaviour.
Her rapid editing in handmade stop motion, lo-fi animation, green screen and direct-to-camera performance give the feeling of a moving collage; a combination of layered images and sounds, composed into a cartoonish reality in which anything is possible.
Her work has previously been shown at various international locations, such as the 16th Biennale de Lyon: Manifesto Of Fragility, Artissima Art Fair in Turin, Wroclaw Contemporary Museum in Poland, Kunstmuseum The Hague, LISTE Art Fair and Kunstmuseum Gegenwart in Basel.
Her work is currently on display at the 8th Yokohama Triennial in Japan and at the Biennial of The Possible Image in Belgium.
Plague, a multimedia installation with a single-channel video at its core, surrounded by sculptures and paintings, is currently show at POST. In the video, a frustrated housefly fantasises about the extermination of humanity. Caught in a fever dream of domesticity, all kinds of absurdist parallels between ecological and psychological ruin/breakdown unfold when Housefly meets Housewife.
