Artist: Robert Glas

Venue: Arnhem
Do harsher sentences make for more or less crime? How does imprisonment affect an inmate's family? And how does enforcing and expanding the opium law affect the prison system? Artist Robert Glas's solo exhibition Confined to some, debarred from others focuses on questions like these. In the past, there was a more active public conversation about criminal law and whether it was the right tool to maintain a society. Today, this public conversation is barely held at all. This exhibition features artworks that encourage visitors to critically reflect and reconsider criminal law and aims to revive the absent public debate.
Robert Glas (1986, NL)
Robert Glas is an artist who lives and works in Rotterdam. In his research-driven artworks, he scrutinises the ways bureaucracies produce justice. Through his film and photo installations, he questions exactly what kind of justice these bureaucracies develop, who benefits from it and at whose expense it is.
His work has been exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Edith Ruß Haus for Media Art (Oldenburg), TENT (Rotterdam), the Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven) and Foam (Amsterdam). In 2019, he received the Charlotte Köhler Prize and the Artist-in-Residence Fellowship from the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS-KNAW). From 2020 to 2022, he was a resident at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten.
