Interplay of Commons: a Site for Collective Care and Alternative Economies
POST Arnhem: Weverstraat 40 6811 EM, Arnhem
How can commoning, as a praxis, become a fundamental site of resistance to the social-political violence of coloniality? In which forms can this praxis take shape, grow, and move towards a reparative future of healing colonial wounds?
Interplay of Commons is a three-part programme in which we collectively explore pedagogical approaches to translocal actions of resistance and learning from others by combining theory and practice, or praxis. We will dive into commoning practices, derived from the idea of commoning culture, a term historian Peter Linebaugh uses to describe the collective practice of maintaining, protecting, and sharing resources through social organisations, while emphasizing the communal care and relationships that emerge from these actions.
Commoning has developed rapidly as a praxis in response to the ongoing logic of coloniality, that reproduces hierarchies of race, gender, labour, culture and knowledge long after the formal end of colonial administrations. Ongoing marginalisation, genocides, practices of resource and knowledge extraction, and dispossession of Indigenous lands have lead local, marginalised communities to both question the ongoing reproduction of these violences, and work collectively on being and living together differently. Their organisation is an act of collective resistance.
During the three gatherings, research activists, culture and social workers discuss the commons to understand how it is applied in their respective practices. We will find ways to carry these teachings in our everyday lives and further nurture these methodologies within our own respective communities through weaving stories, mapping knowledges, and nourishing our bodies with food. Participating in the programme are Lestari Bergerak, Nuraini Juliastuti, Reza Afisina, Dewi Sofia and CookLab.
