What stories are hidden in the streets, walls and facades of Nijmegen? How does matter move through time? And what can we learn from nature cultures?
In the solo exhibition The Middle Realm, artist Simone Albers focuses on her local environment in Nijmegen as a living system in which traces of the past are stored. The exhibition shows how nature and culture are not isolated but relational. Curator of public programmes Martine van Lubeek will talk with artist Simone Albers about the creation of The Middle Realm, recent developments in her artistic practice, and the connections between art and science that she creates in her works.
Simone Albers
Simone Albers' art consists of colourful paintings, sculptures and installations focusing on the connection between humans and more-than-human environments. She explores how we are part of this world and our interaction with it. Her artworks invite us to break free from a frame of mind in which humans take centre stage. They generate an open gaze to contemplate the vibrant, complex and dynamic nature of the world.
Albers studied Fine Art at ArtEZ University of the Arts Arnhem. Her work has featured in solo presentations at the Valkhof Museum (2017), Kunstenlab (2023) and Galerie Maurits van de Laar (2023), among others. In 2019, her work was nominated for the Royal Prize for Free Painting and in 2022 she won the Sieger White Award, after which her book Myriad Ways of Being ~ Being of Myriad Ways was published by Jap Sam Books.
