What stories are hidden in the streets, walls, and facades of Nijmegen? How does matter move through time? And how did the exhibition The Middle Realm come into being?
Nijmegen harbors a unique collection of stones—not only within the walls of the exhibition at POST, but also scattered throughout public space. On the final weekend of Simone Albers’ solo exhibition, we invite you to a special walk from Museum De Bastei to POST. Guided by geologist Piet Thijssen, we’ll discover how the history of the city can be read in its stones.
Afterwards, public program curator Martine van Lubeek will speak with artist Simone Albers about her practice, the development of The Middle Realm, and the intertwining of science and art.
PLEASE NOTE: The walk starts at Museum De Bastei, Lange Baan 4, 6511 XJ, Nijmegen.
Piet Thijssen
Piet Thijssen is a geologist specializing in the description of stones. In the 1990s, he retrained in geographic information systems (GIS) and currently works at the Dutch Cadastre’s Basic Registration of Addresses and Buildings (BAG). Since 2003, he has also volunteered at De Bastei (formerly the Nijmegen Natural History Museum), where he researches rocks and core samples.
Simone Albers
Simone Albers creates colorful paintings, sculptures, and installations centered on the relationship between humans and the more-than-human world. She explores how we are part of and interact with this world. Her artworks invite viewers to break free from a human-centered perspective and open up to the vibrant, complex, and dynamic nature of existence.
Albers studied Fine Art at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Valkhof Museum (2017), Kunstenlab (2023), and Galerie Maurits van de Laar (2023). In 2019, her work was nominated for the Royal Award for Modern Painting, and in 2022 she won the Sieger White Award, after which her book Myriad Ways of Being ~ Being of Myriad Ways was published by Jap Sam Books.
