Experience the many meanings of ‘ballast’ during Kunstnacht at POST. Feel its weight, but also the weightlessness that comes from sharing it. POST will be hosting Elky Rosa Gerritsen during the Nijmeegse Kunstnacht. She takes the visitor on a journey through her exploration of ballast and presents her performance Palimpsest. 

Palimpsest is the third and final part of a multi-year research project into ballast by the theatre maker Elky Rosa Gerritsen. A performance about everything we carry within us and everything that anchors itself in our bodies; whether visible or not.

A duet between mind and body. Between repression and embrace. Between fantasy and reality. And everything in between.

In a landscape of thoughts that reacts, distorts and shifts, a performer explores the effect of the mental load ('ballast') on a person. Which layer rises to the surface? What kind of ballast do you carry without ever asking for it? Enter a figurative realm of inner layers, from which a person, a city or a memory is formed.

Old traces never disappear completely; they leave their mark beneath everything that is new. That idea is at the heart of the performance. Music, imagery, text and movement merge into an experience that brings to life how mental ballast settles, pushes and twists; and how we can bear it, share it or rewrite it. An intimate, poetic performance that invites us to see things differently.

As well as the performance, you’ll discover two other works by Elky Rosa in the communal area of the Paraplufabrieken. One of these works consists of bags filled with bottles of water, which you can carry yourself as ballast. Whilst you wait to enter the performance space, these works invite you to reflect on the theme of ballast. The performance is the third part of a trilogy in which Elky Rosa researches this theme; The works in the communal area constitute the first and second parts of this artistic exploration.
