What does it actually mean to be “crazy”? Who gets to decide who is mentally healthy (and—more importantly—who isn’t)? And what might a society look like if the 'abnormal' brain was celebrated instead of pathologised?
To explore these questions together, Nijmegen-based makers Moni Zwitserloot and Sandro van der Leeuw are organising a Mad Pride on Monday the 19th of January (aka Blue Monday). On this evening they’ll christen a literary brochure containing musings on our healthcare system by six fantastic queer writers. Why a brochure, you ask? Because: f*ck the f*cking brochure in every f*cking waiting room and the many attempts to straighten out what is meant to flow. But also: if we have to wait anyway, why not do it in a way that fits? On a future that fits.
We are not fans of public participation. We are fans of performances, glitter, and prescriptions, though, so expect a lot of that. And to close out the evening, everyone will go home with a large stack of brochures. These may be distributed, at your own discretion, in all the waiting rooms where you’ve ever felt too much, too little, too difficult, or too “crazy.” Not to fight against, but to fight for. Fór our quirks. Fór our ifs, buts and maybes. Fór our madness. Because, as Seal once so beautifully sang: we’re never gonna survive, unless we get a little crazy.
With recitals by, among others Vlinder Verouden, Oumaima Belkhdar en Isa Bob van Rooy
