What world are we building with the technologies we are developing? What alternatives emerge if we develop and use technology in a different way? And what role can we play in this ourselves?
On Wednesday evening, November 18, we’ll be exploring the techno-political landscape of both today and the future during ECHO, an in-depth evening in light of the group exhibition Networks of Precarity. This exhibition explores the everyday vulnerabilities that arise in our relationship with digital technology. The works thus challenge the dominant narrative of progress promoted by Big Tech. They do so by shifting the focus towards bottom-up initiatives, magical traditions and the human dimension in our relationship with technology.
In the recurring programme ECHO, POST invites a number of speakers to reflect on the themes of the exhibition, drawing on their personal or professional experience. In this edition, politician Frank de Gram, cyber artist Cyanne van den Houten and the Nijmegen Hackerspace will take you on a journey through their own relationship with technology. Each of them is, in their own way, venturing off the beaten track of Big Tech: whilst Frank de Gram is active on alternative social media, Cyanne van den Houten is modifying their own electronics to expose power structures, and Hackerspace is working on a community based on open standards, open source and open systems. Together, they demonstrate how technology can take shape outside the dominant systems of Big Tech, and they will share practical tools and insights to help you get started with alternative forms of technology yourself.
Hackerspace Nijmegen (NL)
Hackerspace Nijmegen is a community of people interested in technology in its broadest sense. We are part of a world-wide community of Hackers and Hackerspaces. In our Hackerspace, there is room to come together and socialize, to share knowledge, and to work creatively on both hard- and software.
The Hackerspace community consists of people curious to explore the (im)possibilities of new and old technologies. How does a device work? Is this software safe? Can I install open software on a closed system? How do I make my own gadget? These are the typical questions that come to a hacker’s mind. We are in favour of open standards, open systems and open source.
Cyanne van den Houten (NL)
Cyanne van den Houten is a computer artist. They work hands-on with DIY electronics and generative algorithmic systems to expose embedded power structures. Rooted in queer, magical, feminist, and noise ideologies, their large-scale interactive installations connect cyber-sculptures with chatbots, archives, and game environments through networked protocols. They create mystical, immersive spaces in which audiences can enter into dialogue with magnified aspects of our increasingly sentient-seeming machines.
As founder of the media-art collective Telemagic and the Rotterdam artist-run space .zip, they foster collaborative explorations of digital culture through artistic research, tool-sharing, and hackathons.
