How might one deal with contemporary trolls, such as populist politicians, conspirationists, climate change deniers, or the manosphere? What strategies might we need to rethink dynamics of (online) interaction? And how can we reclaim the swamp of online expression?
You’re cordially invited to explore these questions through the game Troll Swamp. Troll Swamp is a large-scale board game for multiple players, based on the formats and characters from the popular tabletop game Dungeons and Dragons. It responds to the challenges emerging from our current digital climate by having players engage in role-play and teamwork in order to act out scenarios against online trolling. Guided by the Troll Master (a storyteller guiding the players through the game), each player will face their own online habits as well as their relationship with others by creating a persona. With this persona, you create a buffer between the in-game experiences and those you might face in everyday life. Yet, it gives you the opportunity to regain confidence, rethink dynamics of interaction and reclaim a different space of expression online.
Guided by the artists that created the game - Eloïse Bonneviot and Anne de Boer - you’ll join a group of max 10 players for an offline gaming session. The session will be held in English and will take approximately three hours. Drinks and light snacks are provided. We advise a minimum age of 14 to be able to participate.
Eloïse Bonneviot and Anne de Boer (FR/NL)
Eloïse Bonneviot and Anne de Boer are an artist duo based in Brussels. Their work explores a wide range of topics, from speculative world-building, to ecology, and interspecies relationships. Rooted in digital culture, technology, and DIY-practices, their work invites the audience to interact with the work beyond traditional exhibition format. Different types of gameplays are used to generate collectively imagined stories about our future in times of ecological collapse. Troll Swamp was co-produced by Bergen Assembly in 2019.
Their work has been exhibited at Cordova, Barcelona; Kunstraum Kreuzberg, Berlin; Current - Art and Urban Space, Stuttgart; HEK, Basel, Hangar Y, Meudon/Paris; Heidelberger Kunstverein; the Athens Biennale; and the Bergen Assembly. From 2014 to 2022 they operated as the Mycological Twist, and before that from 2011 to 2020 they were part of the collective HARD-CORE.
