In recent years, there has been a strong rise in games designed by artists. This artistic form of gaming uses interactive stories, the creation of alternative worlds and participation to make complex social themes accessible and relatable. The climate is manifesting itself in an increasingly tangible fashion, both gender and migration issues are dividing our society, and technological developments such as AI are raising ethical and social questions. How can gaming serve as a driver for social and political change in a world where questions about justice, the future and technology are central?
In the participatory exhibition PLAYTIME!, artists use play to create a space where major topics can be discussed with the younger generation. Various artists use game mechanisms as a means of reflection, world-building and social engagement. From moral dilemmas to utopian visions: the artworks in the exhibition invite visitors to think, build and play along. PLAYTIME! shows us that we can influence the course of the game. In this way, the exhibition hopes to give the younger generation confidence in their creative agency and thus plant a seed for change in our world.
