Three months ago, on 28 January 2025, the Dutch House of Representatives passed a new drugs bill: an opium act. This bill bans the production and distribution of three groups of new psychoactive substances (NPS). While drugs are increasingly seen as a problem in our society, researchers, policymakers, and workers in addiction treatment are speaking out against measures that prohibit an increasing amount of substances. Thus, in 2019 - exactly 100 years after the creation of the first Opium Act - the Manifesto for a Realistic Drug Policy emerged. In it, the initiators (Jellinek Addiction Care & Recovery Institution, political party D66, and criminologist Ton Nabben) argue for realistic policies aimed at regulating and legalising opioid drugs. This contrasts with the new Opium Act, which actually bans even more substances. How will this bill affect the current War on Drugs?
This question will be the starting point of the next edition of ECHO on Wednesday 18 June. Two professionals in the field of drug policy, prevention and research will shine their light on the current state of the War on Drugs in the Netherlands, share their ideas on a realistic drug policy and ask you, the audience, to join them in thinking about the question: where to go from here?
